Journalist Tomas Roncero has sensationally claimed via El Chiringuito TV that Barcelona were not in favour of the goal-line technology in the first place.

He said when the topic was being discussed, Real Madrid wanted this technology to be used, but Barcelona were not having it.

“Real Madrid wanted goal technology, and Barcelona was in favour of not having it. Now don’t complain,” said Roncero.

Lack of technology favoured Real Madrid

During Sunday’s El Clasico, which Real Madrid won 3-2, Barcelona were denied an alleged goal after Lamine Yamal’s flick was cleared by Andriy Lunin.

This stirred up a massive debate as Barcelona players wanted the referee to check the incident via VAR. Given the benefit of the doubt, Barcelona were left red-faced as no goal was awarded.

Tomas Roncero said Barcelona were against the idea of using goal-line technology.

Barcelona manager Xavi expressed frustration about the event, stating it was particularly unjust to his team, especially given the context of the game.

“This was unfair. It is very clear. Everyone saw it. I repeat, it was a huge injustice today,” he added later in the press conference,” said the manager during the post-match press conference.

Why is there no goal-line technology in La Liga?

La Liga has stated that the use of this technology is limited, making the substantial investment it would require unjustifiable.

Implementing it in La Liga would necessitate a FIFA license costing over €2 million to cover all 380 matches in the Spanish First Division each season.

Expanding the use of this technology to the Spanish Second Division would add a significant cost, possibly more than doubling the expenses to over €4 million for the 420 games in that league.

Considering the circumstances, regardless of what happened, Barcelona have no one to blame as Roncero has clearly stated that they were against the idea of using this tech.
