Gianluigi Donnarumma (25) has been dropped twice within the space of a month by Paris Saint-Germain. Replaced by Matvei Safonov (25) on both occasions, Luis Enrique has evoked the battle for the No.1 jersey at PSG.
Despite reports that the previous goalkeeping hierarchy reportedly being abolished over the summer, Donnarumma did, however, start the season as No.1 – just as he was last season. The Italian has, however, underwhelmed this season, particularly in the UEFA Champions League.
He was then a shock omission from the starting line-up to face RC Lens earlier this month. Speaking post-match, Luis Enrique revealed that Donnarumma was not injured. “I want players that are ready,” was Les Parisiens’ slightly cryptic reason for leaving out to former AC Milan shot-stopper.
Donnarumma was left out again against Toulouse on Friday night. Asked whether Safonov has managed to shake up the goalkeeping hierarchy, Luis Enrique was evasive post-match. “Maybe. Maybe yes, maybe no,” said the PSG manager. As always, actions speak louder than words and Luis Enrique’s actions evidence the doubts that Donnarumma brings.
Should Safonov, who had been bullish in his determination to win the No.1 jersey since joining PSG, start against Bayern Munich in the Champions League, it would be a statement indeed.
