The winners of the Copa Libertadores, Botafogo, beat European champions Paris Saint-Germain (1-0) at the Rose Bowl in the biggest shock of the FIFA Club World Cup so far.

PSG beat Atletico Madrid 4-0 in their first game of the tournament but fielded a weakened side against Botafogo, which included second-string options such as Gonçalo Ramos, Senny Mayulu, Warren Zaïre-Emery, and Lucas Beraldo.

PSG, winners of this season’s UEFA Champions League, went behind through a deflected Igor Jesus strike in the first half and, despite chances to equalise, the Ligue 1 side could not restore parity. “It’s for the whole of Brazil. We play football, too,” said Botafogo’s owner, John Textor, after their slender win in Pasadena.

The defeat leaves PSG in need of a result when they face Seattle Sounders on Monday. Botafogo currently top their group with six points. Les Parisiens and Atletico Madrid are both on three points, whilst MLS side Seattle Sounders are yet to pick up their first point in the tournament.
