Stockport County and Leyton Orient clash this Wednesday at Edgeley Park in the second leg of their EFL League One play-off semi-final. The match will be broadcast live at 20:00 on Sky Sports Football.
The 2-2 draw in the first leg tie between the two sides had everything, including a refereeing decision that Stockport manager Dave Challinor afterwards branded the worst he had seen in 15 years of management!
It's perfectly poised ahead of the second-leg, with both sides in form and no doubt fancying their chances of reaching the League One play-off final at Wembley.
Daniel Culverwell (The Scarf Bergara Wore): Well, the first leg was good enough to be a final and was definitely the best of the six EFL playoff first leg ties. Let's not talk about the worst offside decision in the history of the EFL playoffs anymore, it is clear for all (apart from the linesman) to see.
I think County's Saturdays starting 11 deserve to start again, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they will. This game is going to be won and lost from the dugouts. The tactical decisions made from both benches and the impact of their substitutions, for me, will be the main discussion points we are talking about on Thursday morning when County fans wake up late for work with sore heads and lost voices.
County should have the better bench that can impact the game at any stage and I see this being the difference on the night. I foresee a cagey 1-1 going into the final 20 minutes - with County subs making an impact and helping us come out 3-1 winners in the 90 mins.
I talked last time about the influence Norwood has on this County team, but on Saturday I was so Impressed with Owen Moxon. Having joined on deadline day from Portsmouth having only playing a bit part in the Championship, it has taken Owen a while to find his fitness and the form that made him devastating for Carlisle in the L2 play off final against County two seasons ago. On Saturday, though, his energy and quality allowed Norwood to conduct the game.
Steve Nussbaum (Orient Outlook Podcast): After the drama of Saturday it’s almost time to do it all again as the O’s travel to Stockport County in a winner takes all fixture for a place in the League One Play Off Final at Wembley.
Saturday had it all in a game which could have gone either way with excitement, drama, and the odd controversial refereeing decision. Both teams would feel like they could have won the game, and we are hoping for more of the same on Wednesday.
And the O’s have every reason to be confident making the journey to Stockport. A spirited performance where we looked dangerous going forwards with Charlie Kelman adding another two goals in his amazing season, taking his tally to 27 this term, and it could have been even better had we taken our late chances in the game.
We have been strong on the road this season and with a loud and passionate crowd roaring the O’s on it’s sure to be an electric atmosphere. And having comprehensively won at Edgeley Park earlier in the season (and on our previous visit) we’ve had happier times in Stockport recently (leading to the crowd singing ‘we always win at Edgeley Park upon the full time whistle on Saturday).
The big question for Richie Wellens will be the fitness of Jordan Brown who the O’s missed on Saturday, where to play Jamie Donley who played a deeper role than normal in the first leg and whether Richie should switch to a back four if both Jack Currie and Tom James are ready to start in their relevant full back positions.
No matter what lineup and formation Super Richie Wellens chooses, you can rest assured that the O’s fanbase will be right behind him and backing the Orient 100%.
Like Richie said in his guest appearance on The Orient Outlook Podcast on Sunday, ‘I want our last game together with the supporters and this group of players to be at a special place, and this special place is not Stockport’s ground, it’s somewhere else’. We hear you Mr Wellens. Up The O’s!
