Pre-season silverware will be on the line at St. James’ Park this weekend when Newcastle United and AC Milan contest the inaugural Women’s Sela Cup.

Following the success of last season’s men’s Sela Cup, the women’s equivalent is being launched this year with Newcastle United taking on European opposition for the first time as a professional team.

Following last season’s FA Women’s National League Northern Premier Division title success, Newcastle United have been very active in the summer transfer window. Manager Becky Langley has added seven new faces to her squad so far including last season’s Barclays Women’s Championship Golden Glove winner Claudia Moan, UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 winner Demi Stokes and seasoned Barclays Women’s Super League midfielder Rachel Furness. Many of Langley’s new signings could take to the field at St. James’ Park this weekend.

AC Milan arrive on Tyneside off the back of a mid-table finish in the Italian Serie A Femminile eBay last season. The club will be hoping to progress this term after appointing Dutchwoman Suzanne Bakker as their new head coach over the summer. The Rossonere have former Barclays Women’s Super League players Emma Koivisto and Nikola Karczewska in their ranks while new club captain Christy Grimshaw is a Scotland international. The likes of Evelyn Ijeh, Andrea Stašková and Emelyne Laurent could provide danger in attack.

The Women’s Sela Cup fixture between Newcastle United and AC Milan is scheduled to kick-off at 1pm on Saturday afternoon. Tickets remain on-sale and can be purchased by clicking here.
