Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi has become one of the most talked-about names of the summer window, with Liverpool emerging as frontrunners in the race for his signature. According to Sky Sports, discussions have taken place but the valuation remains a stumbling block.
“Crystal Palace value Liverpool target Marc Guehi at more than £40m. Liverpool have held talks about signing Guehi, but at the moment there is a gap in valuation. The Premier League champions are the favourites to sign him.”
The scenario reflects a familiar tension of modern transfers, where a player’s growing reputation meets a club’s desire to manage spending. Liverpool, champions once again, know Guehi represents both a present asset and a long-term investment, yet the numbers will decide the outcome.

Palace’s stance is firm. At 24, Guehi has matured into a leader at Selhurst Park, commanding the back line with assurance and composure. His qualities extend beyond the defensive basics. He reads danger quickly, is calm in possession and has the tactical awareness to adapt to different systems.
For Palace, the England international represents a cornerstone of their project. Letting him go this summer would only be considered at a premium, particularly as the club prepare for European football. Sky Sports reported, “The player is happy to stay at Palace and play in Europe. If Palace were to agree a fee with Liverpool then he would be happy to talk to them but that has not happened.”
This underlines Guehi’s professionalism. He is content to stay where he is, but the prospect of Liverpool, with their pull and prestige, remains a powerful lure should an agreement be reached.
The Reds’ pursuit of Guehi is no surprise. With the evolution of their squad, investing in a defender of his profile makes strategic sense. Guehi has shown he can compete at the highest level and still has room to grow.
The discussion, however, is as much about timing as price. “The question is whether they can negotiate a fee now or wait to sign him as a free agent next summer.” That decision could define the move. Pay the premium now and Liverpool secure their man immediately, or bide their time and risk rival clubs intervening in twelve months.

Reports also suggest the possibility of a player moving in the opposite direction, adding another layer to negotiations. Palace’s hierarchy will weigh up what benefits them most in both footballing and financial terms.
Guehi’s performances have not gone unnoticed. “Multiple big clubs in the Premier League and across Europe are aware that Guehi may be available as a free agent next summer.” That awareness is a key factor. Liverpool’s advantage today could quickly disappear if Palace hold firm and other clubs sense an opportunity down the line.
For now, the England defender remains at Selhurst Park, preparing for another season in familiar colours. The decision lies not with him but with the clubs. Palace have the power in this window, Liverpool have the desire, and Europe’s elite are watching closely.
For Crystal Palace, the valuation makes perfect sense. Marc Guehi has developed into one of the best young centre-backs in the league, so anything under £40m would feel like underselling him. Palace are no longer in the position of needing to sell cheaply, particularly with European football adding prestige to the club. Fans would view his retention as a sign of ambition, and his leadership on the pitch is vital to the team’s balance.
From Liverpool’s side, there is excitement about the idea of Guehi in red. He fits the profile: young, proven in the Premier League and with the potential to be a long-term defensive partner for the club’s established leaders. Supporters will point to the importance of reinforcing the back line as the club looks to defend their title. However, there is also a recognition that Liverpool have become shrewd in the transfer market. They may not be willing to meet Palace’s valuation now, preferring to play the long game and secure him as a free agent.
Both sets of supporters will agree on one thing: Guehi’s future has become one of the defining stories of this transfer window, and it could shape the ambitions of both clubs in the months ahead.
