An update on the future of Barcelona target Nico Williams has been provided today, amid reports linking him with a move to Premier League side Chelsea.

Williams has been the centre of attention during this transfer window with many of Europe’s elite clubs monitoring his situation at Athletic Club. The winger has failed to dismiss reports suggesting he will leave the club and has flirted with the idea of making the switch away from La Liga.

The 21-year-old has increased speculations with some superb performances for Spain at the European Championship. Barcelona have earmarked the forward as a potential target for this transfer window, however they know that there will be plenty of competition from other sides for his signature.

Chelsea are huge admirers of the player and after missing out on Bayern Munich bound Michael Olise, the English media have suggested they will break the bank for the Spaniard. However, as reported by Fabrzio Romano, this is not the case and the London-based club have officially left the rase for Williams.

In the player’s contract there is a release clause worth €58m and this must be paid up-front in one instalment and Chelsea have no plans to activate the release clause to sign him.

Despite their appreciation for the player, the club believe the current package to sign the player is too expensive. Chelsea have had Williams on their shortlist since last summer but have now officially left the race for the Barca target.
