Fábio Silva has become used to changing club throughout his young career. Indeed, this summer the former Porto striker is expected to be on the move again when he returns to Wolverhampton Wanderers from yet another loan stint.
However, a bright season spent with Las Palmas in Spain has vindicated what some considered a surprise choice last summer. The result for Silva is likely to be many suitors as he decides his future in the coming weeks.
Silva scored 10 goals in La Liga from his 25 appearances, registering an additional three assists. Given the Canary Island outfit were relegated in dire form well before the end of the season, the numbers reflect Silva’s ability to score goals wherever he goes, while notable strikes away against both Barcelona and Real Madrid certainly added to his reputation.
“Las Palmas welcomed me like a son,” Silva said this week after playing his final match. “With patience, with affection, with love. And I felt that every day, in every training session, in every hug I received.
“Here I am happy again. I believe in myself again. I smile again when I play football. And that makes this farewell even more difficult. Thank you to my teammates, coaches, staff and everyone who treated me with respect and honesty from day one. I sincerely thank president Miguel Ángel Ramirez, coach Diego Martínez and Luis Helguera for their trust, support and the way they have accompanied me on this journey.
“Thank you to the fans for being there, for feeling and supporting me, even in the pain. I will take you with me. Always Las Palmas,” he finished.
Silva has duly been listed as one of seven nominees for the U23 Player of the Year award in La Liga. Whilst the Portugal international is not expected to win the prize, he joins an illustrious group which includes Barcelona duo Lamine Yamal and Pedri, as well as Jude Bellingham and Arda Güler of Real Madrid, Diego López of Valencia, as well as his Las Palmas teammate Alberto Moleiro.
Silva, who won the U23 Player of the Month in Spain for April and November, will return to Molineux this summer having also had loan spells with Anderlecht, PSV and Rangers during the last few years. It remains to be seen which of the many interested parties from across the continent will win his signature, or if Wolves boss Vítor Pereira pushes for the 22-year-old to get another shot in the West Midlands.
