Portsmouth have had a positive start to the new Championship season under John Mousinho.

After managing to secure their second-tier safety in their first term back, many believed Pompey might have struggled towards the bottom end of the division once again, but they are on the periphery of the play-off places after a terrific opening four games.

Portsmouth have collected two victories, one draw and suffered just one defeat so far, as well as having a busy summer transfer window.

In total, 11 new players have entered the building on the South Coast, with the addition of Conor Chaplin from Ipswich Town an unexpected one heading into the final hours of deadline day.

The forward sealed an emotional return to the club on a season-long deal, where he had previously come though the ranks at Fratton Park before leaving for Coventry City in 2018.

Now he is back to add an extra source of goals to the Pompey frontline, as they aim to continue to push up the division after a good start.

With this news in mind, FLW’s Portsmouth fan pundit has commented on the addition of Chaplin and whether he is a good fit back in a Pompey shirt.

Portsmouth's capture of Conor Chaplin lauded as the “transfer of the window”

Speaking to Football League World, Portsmouth fan pundit Miltos Ioannidis has labelled the arrival of Conor Chaplin to Portsmouth as the “transfer of the window”, believing it "raises the levels" of the Pompey attack heading into the rest of the campaign.

Miltos said: “Is there any words that can describe this? What a signing this is.

“It’s absolutely incredible how we’ve managed to get Conor Chaplin, news that broke out of the complete blue, and initially I thought they were fake, some people saying they’d just spotted Chaplin in Portsmouth etc, but yeah, just incredible, it really is, and what a signing, what a coup for us, definitely the transfer of the window.

“We’ve now got a really strong attack with the arrival of Chaplin. He really raises the levels, with the fact we’ve managed to keep Murphy, which I believe is an achievement in itself, is as good as a new signing.

“Segecic, Lang, Colby Bishop up top, of course, it’s a very good Championship attack, and hopefully we can push forward now and ensure we not only step up in the Championship but we keep wanting more and more from ourselves, push the boundaries, keep on being ambitious, and it’s been a good transfer window for us, with Conor Chaplin the cherry on top, if I’m honest.”

Portsmouth have the makings of a dangerous Championship outfit

The arrival of Conor Chaplin allows Portsmouth to be so free-flowing in attack, with Chaplin showing what he can do at this level, particularly from his time at Ipswich Town in recent times.

Adrian Segecic, their new arrival from Sydney FC, has made an instant impact behind Colby Bishop, scoring twice, but he is also comfortable playing out wide.

Chaplin's arrival would open up the opportunity of having Segecic partner Josh Murphy on the wings, with the Ipswich man playing off of Bishop just behind him, which makes for an exciting frontline.

Those four players are no strangers to goal contributions in the Championship either, and Pompey fans should be excited that they have enough ammunition at the top end of the pitch to help ease the pressure on the backline.

It’s a team that is bubbling along nicely, and it would be no surprise to see Portsmouth disrupt the apple cart and be in the promotion mix come the end of the season with the players they have at their disposal.
