Paris Saint-Germain have announced the signing of Oliwia Szperkowska. She is now the second Polish goalkeeper to arrive at the club.

In the summer, Katarzyna Kiedrzynek came back to Paris after three years in Wolfsburg. She appeared at Parc des Princes during the Champions League semi-final and received a warm welcome from the supporters of her then former club. Soon after, she was back between PSG’s posts.

But her commitment to the club appeared to be more than just a huge comeback. Kiedrzynek also secured a second place in goal with Constance Picaud’s future still not sure, directing the club’s interest to her young teammate from the Poland national team.

Szperkowska had been with UKS SMS Łódź since 2017, winning the U19 champion title in her debut year. She went on to win the 2012/22 Ekstraliga title and the Polish Cup Trophy the following season. After those successes, she moved to the most decorated Polish club, Czarni Sosnowiec, in summer 2023. Despite playing in all 11 games of the autumn, her journey with the 13-time national champions was not long. She has now joined PSG, signing a two-and-a-half year contract.

“PSG is one of the best clubs in the world, they have always been at the top and when I found out that they were interested, I had no doubts. I am enthusiastic. It’s a big change, but you have to leave your comfort zone to learn new things, to move to the next level and to discover a new country. You just have to want to enter that world,” Szperkowska said in her first interview for the club.

The 22-year-old is being regularly called up to the national team, but is yet to make her senior debut. Szperkowska played the first half of the Poland U23 game against Vietnam in Pruszków in June 2023.

Polish talent in France

Oliwia Szperkowska is now the third Polish player at PSG, after Katarzyna Kiedrzynek and Paulina Dudek, who tore her ACL during summer training, just after recovering from the same injury. PSG are the second club in D1 Arkema with a Polish trio, after rivals Fleury with Dominika Grabowska, Ewelina Kamczyk and Dominika Kopińska.

The league also features the other players of the national team — Kinga Szemik, the goalkeeper of Reims, and Małgorzata Grec and Klaudia Jedlińska, Dijon’s centre-back and winger.
