FIFA Club World Cup, Quarter-final, 05/07/25
Goals from Ousmane Dembélé and Désiré Doué ensured that nine-man Paris Saint-Germain progressed to the semi-final of the FIFA Club World Cup at Bayern Munich’s expense (2-0).
The goalkeepers were the stars of the first half, keeping the score level. It took PSG until midway through the half to test Manuel Neuer. They had chances prior, but Doué, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, and Fabián Ruiz all failed to hit the target from good positions.
When Neuer was tested, he was equal to it. Kvaratskhelia unleashed a shot from close range, but Neuer spread himself well to block the effort and then get down quickly to prevent the Georgian from rounding him and putting the ball into what would have been an empty net.
Gianluigi Donnarumma was busy, too. He denied Michael Olise’s effort in the 22nd minute and then reacted brilliantly to save low from a Aleksandar Pavlovic cross, which ultimately was not touched by Jamal Musiala, who was cutting in front of him.
The Italian then had to pick the ball out of his net after Dayot Upamecano headed past him. However, the Frenchman, like all of his Bayern Munich teammates, was offside from the free-kick. Donnarumma would be involved minutes later, on the stroke of half-time, in a collision with Musiala, who was stretchered off with what looked like a serious injury.
Neuer was tested again early in the second half and was equal to Bradley Barcola’s effort when one-on-one. However, the German was then at fault later in the half, hitting Kvaratskhelia with his clearance. Dembélé picked up the pieces but, destabilised by the recovering Neuer, he could only find the side-netting with his effort.
With the game seemingly heading towards extra time, Neuer was finally beaten. Doué wrong-footed the Bayern Munich goalkeeper with his effort from outside the box to give PSG the lead. However, the reigning European champions would have to cling on.
Moments later, Willian Pacho was sent off for a clumsy high challenge on Leon Goretzka. Then, in injury time, and after Harry Kane saw a header chalked off for offside, PSG were down to nine as Lucas Hernandez caught Raphaël Guerreiro in the face with a stray elbow.
Holding on, PSG then got a second through Dembélé, whose shot nestled beyond Neuer and into the far corner. It is Les Parisiens, therefore, who progress to the semi-finals of the Club World Cup.
Gianluigi Donnarumma – 7
The Italian was involved in the incident that blighted the fixture, colliding with Musiala. However, he was imperious for PSG, making two big saves in the first half and proving dominant inside his own box, bar one moment when he missed a cross in the dying seconds.
Nuno Mendes – 5
Willian Pacho – 3
Marquinhos – 5
Achraf Hakimi – 7
Fabián Ruiz – 4
João Neves – 5
Vitinha – 6
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia – 6
Désiré Doué – 7
Once again, the Frenchman’s decision-making was questionable at times. That is a common thread for him during this Club World Cup, but he is always capable of a moment of magic. A great ball-striker, he has a shoot-on-sight policy and that (eventually) paid dividends.
Bradley Barcola – 7
The most eye-catching outfield player. On the right instead of his favoured position out on the left, he had some lovely touches and was at the root of Ruiz’s good chance in the first half, taking on his man and then spreading the play.
Harry Kane – 6
Michael Olise – 6
Kingsley Coman – 5
Manuel Neuer – 7
The German pulled off some exceptional saves but then somewhat blotted his copybook, firstly with his poor clearance, which was almost capitalised on by Dembélé, and then PSG’s opener. He took a step to the right at just the wrong time, lost his footing entirely and couldn’t get anywhere near Doué’s effort.
