Manchester City surged back from a two-goal deficit to dismantle Crystal Palace 5-2 in a pulsating Premier League encounter at the Etihad. The result not only reignited City’s charge for a top-four finish but reminded everyone just how devastating they can be when Kevin De Bruyne is in full flow.
Despite finding themselves stunned early on by strikes from Eberechi Eze and Chris Richards, Pep Guardiola’s side responded with ruthless efficiency. De Bruyne’s exquisite free-kick was the spark before Omar Marmoush levelled just before the interval. Once the second half began, City were relentless.
City looked flat for the opening half hour, but a shift in tempo and mentality, often seen under Guardiola in big moments, flipped the game on its head. Mateo Kovacic thundered in the third goal from distance moments into the second period, with young talents James McAtee and Nico O’Reilly adding the fourth and fifth to seal a statement victory.
This was a night where the youth combined with experience to devastating effect. McAtee and O’Reilly – both products of City’s academy – impressed not just with their goals but their composure in high-pressure situations.
It all began so brightly for Oliver Glasner’s men. Eze danced through midfield with confidence and took his goal superbly, while Richards was a threat from set pieces. But once City found their rhythm, Palace couldn’t contain the onslaught. By the end, they looked shellshocked – surrendering a two-goal cushion without much resistance.
It’s another reminder of the gap that still exists between teams striving for consistency in the Premier League and those operating on a different level of depth and technical ability. Palace can take heart from their explosive start, but the drop-off after the break was too stark.
This result thrusts Manchester City back into fourth place, momentarily ahead of Chelsea and Newcastle. With fifth offering Champions League football next season, City have put themselves in a strong position heading into the final run-in.
