The winger is going to leave the Posh as a free agent this summer.

Barry Fry believes that Peterborough United star Kwame Poku will end up signing for a Championship club this summer, amid interest from Birmingham City, Celtic and Rangers.

The injury that the 23-year-old winger suffered towards the end of 2024 put Peterborough in a very tough position. The upcoming January window was their last chance to make a major profit on the former Colchester United man, who the Posh bought for £250,000 in 2021.

Unfortunately, the injury made selling Poku in the winter much harder to do, and he is now going to leave the club as a free agent when his contract expires this summer.

Peterborough will still earn "millions and millions" from the Ghanaian when he does find a new home, according to United's chairman Darragh MacAnthony, as that club will have to pay the League One side compensation, but not as much as they could've earned from a transfer.

Birmingham are keen on Poku. Football League World understands that they are willing to offer him a huge £30,000 per week wage, but they will reportedly face competition from Scottish football's two biggest clubs.

Fry, Peterborough's director of football, has revealed that representatives from the Glaswegian teams have attended a lot of games at the Weston Homes Stadium this season in order to watch Poku.

FLW's sister publication, GiveMeSport, have reported that Birmingham are worried about the possibility of the winger heading north of the border instead of to St Andrew's. Fry, however, doesn't believe that will be the case.

"Celtic and Rangers have been at most of our games this season, but I don’t believe Kwame will go to Scotland. He will more likely sign for a top-end Championship club," claimed the sporting director, via Birmingham Live.

"A Championship club tried to force a deal through for Kwame in January, but he was injured at the time and they didn’t offer anything like what we wanted."

There's one factor that might tempt Kwame Poku into a Scottish move

Going to the second tier of English football would put the Ghanaian on a tried and tested path to the Premier League. So many of the Championship's top talents go up to the Premier League and establish themselves that Poku would surely see himself heading in a similar direction to the world's most popular football league.

The attraction of the top flight and the league below, it is great. We do see how much players value getting to play on the continent in European competitions, though.

A lot of them join clubs purely because they can offer European football to them, and that's something that the Old Firm clubs can provide straight away, while the likes of Birmingham may not get to that level for another half-decade, if they're lucky.

That factor alone could tempt Poku to make the long trip up to Glasgow instead of sticking around in England.
