Manchester United were crowned winners of the 2024 FA Cup after getting the better of fierce cross-town rivals Manchester City 2-1 at Wembley on Saturday.

It was the Red Devils’ 13th triumph in the competition, and it also was the perfect riposte after what had transpired last season when the same two teams had met in the final.

It was a great day for the club after a dismal campaign in which they team finished eighth in the Premier League, their worst-ever and despite a famous win in the capital, manager Erik ten Hag’s time might be up if recent reports are to be believed.

Goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo proved to be enough against a struggling Pep Guardiola team whose rhythm was completely knocked off balance with Ten Hag’s choice of tactics working a treat.

Rashford worked hard

The second goal came from some sublime build-up play involving a fantastic Bruno Fernandes assist but the move started gathering steam with Marcus Rashford’s excellent diagonal cross-field pass.

His pace in behind was a constant threat and while he wa far from impressive, at least he worked hard and tried to track back to help his full-back, traits that have been missing the entire campaign.

The Mancunian has not had the best of seasons with only eight goals coming his way this term, as opposed to his career-best haul of 30 in the last campaign.

Off-field controversies have threatened to derail his United career with recent reports indicating that the new co-owners INEOS are open to moving on the academy graduate.

The boyhood fan reportedly even met the hierarchy to try and convince them to keep him while England manager Gareth Southgate snubbed him when naming the England Euro 2024 squad.

Emotional post-match scenes

Rashford was clearly emotional after the win, with tears flowing down his face and it might hint at a departure after things have gotten toxic recently.

The England international has complained about the abuse he receives constantly while he was seen angrily reacting to a fan at Old Trafford a couple of games ago.

It might also just be an outpouring of emotions after a difficult campaign. The majority of fans will certainly hope that is the case. But the forward needs to re-find himself and focus on the field and produce the results.

The 26-year-old certainly has a lot of potential suitors both in Europe and in England should the new co-owners decide to move him on. The ball is now in INEOS’ court.
