Girondins de Bordeaux’s off-field troubles deepened this week as documents submitted to creditors revealed the club’s real debt before renegotiation stands at an alarming €93.9 million, according to a report from L’Équipe. On 27th May, the Commercial Court will rule on Bordeaux’s proposed recovery plan. If the plan is not approved, the club could face insolvency or even liquidation. L’Équipe do report, however, that majority owner Gérard Lopez is planning to write off €40.5m, but the fourth tier side will still carry around €53m in liabilities. Among the largest creditors are government agencies and public institutions such as the French public finances department who are owed €5.03m as well as social security contributions of up to €3.34m. Bordeaux’s largest single creditor is the U.S. investment firm Fortress, which holds a €6m claim. The club also owes money to dozens of local businesses, ranging from hotels, notably the Mercure chain, to a pharmacy, a bakery, and transport companies.

There are also debts to legal firms, data providers such as Stats Perform, and media organisations including Europe 2 and France Bleu Gironde. In a region synonymous with wine, it is perhaps symbolic that several vignerons are among the unpaid suppliers—alongside major alcohol distributor Pernod Ricard.GFFN | George Boxall
