Arsenal’s title success in 2003/04 is an achievement that will never be forgotten.
Arsene Wenger’s side won the Premier League in record-breaking fashion, becoming the first team to complete a top-flight campaign without defeat in 115 years – matching the feat of Preston North End in the inaugural Football League season of 1888/89.
Arsenal’s season was not short of memorable moments. Thierry Henry was head and shoulders above any other player in the division. Dennis Bergkamp delighted with velvet touches and moments of incision. Patrick Vieira was the Gunners’ general in midfield. Robert Pires and Ashley Cole combined with free-flowing football down the left. Further back, Sol Campbell commanded the backline.
Arguably the sweetest of moments arrived on April 25th, 2004. The Gunners needed just a point to claim the Premier League title ahead of a North London derby at Tottenham Hotspur.
Spurs, desperate to deny Arsenal the title and end their unbeaten streak, were behind inside three minutes. Patrick Vieira slid home after a wonderful counter-attack involving Henry and Bergkamp. Arsenal doubled their lead through Robert Pires and although Spurs mustered a response with goals from Jamie Redknapp and Robbie Keane, it was not enough.
A 2-2 draw sealed the title for Arsenal – the second time the Gunners had won the league at White Hart Lane. The first saw Ray Kennedy head home a late winner as Arsenal sealed success at the home of their arch-rivals in 1971.
This one, in the midst of their Invincible season, was perhaps even better.
