Olivier Giroud is closing in on a return to European football with Lille advancing in talks to sign the forward from Los Angeles FC.
Lille are working on a deal to bring Giroud back to France, as the Ligue 1 outfit seek a replacement for Jonathan David. The latter’s contract expires on June 30th and he will leave Lille as a free agent.
Giroud is open to the return to Europe after an underwhelming spell in Major League Soccer. The 38-year-old has scored just five times in 37 appearances for LAFC since joining the club, as a Designated Player, from AC Milan in 2024.
FootMercato are reporting that a deal is close for Giroud to move to Lille. It would mark the forward’s return to Ligue 1 after a 13-year absence.
France’s record scorer last played in the division for Montpellier in 2011/12, scoring 25 times in all competitions to held the side to a shock title triumph. He won Ligue 1’s top scorer award that season with 21 league goals.
Giroud joined Arsenal that summer and has since had spells with Chelsea, Milan and LAFC.
