Scott McTominay has looked reborn since leaving Manchester United for Napoli last summer.

The 28-year-old is one of manager Antonio Conte’s most trusted players. The Italian tactician has described him as a player with ‘a lot of goals in his DNA’.

He has thrived as a central and attacking midfielder, registering seven goals and four assists in 25 games across all competitions.

Former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes United were wrong to sell the Scottish midfielder.

During an interview with The Athletic, Solskjaer answered the question of whether he still watches United and expressed his displeasure with the club’s decision to sell McTominay.

“When I can,” he said. “It’s still good to see Bruno Fernandes and Harry (Maguire) doing well. And Scotty is doing well at Napoli.

“I’m upset that we let him go because he was important last season when he kept popping up with goals. His heart and his knowledge of the culture were important.”

McTominay was a regular in the starting line-up when Solskjaer was the manager, but he struggled for game time after he left.

McTominay could have thrived under Amorim

Manager Ruben Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 style requires midfielders to cover a lot of ground, making McTominay a good fit into the Portuguese’s set-up.

McTominay is capable of closing down opposition quickly. He can also make late runs into the penalty area to either score goals or register an assist.

He would have been a good partner for Manuel Ugarte, allowing Amorim to play Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes in the two number 10 positions.
