Manchester United have confirmed that Darren Fletcher has been appointed the new lead coach of the Under-18s.
In May, United confirmed that Adam Lawrence would be leaving his role as boss of the Under-18s to seek a new challenge elsewhere.
Lawrence joined United in January 2021 from Charlton, where he served as head of coaching.
He was initially United’s Under-16s lead before he was promoted to oversee the Under-18s two years later. He enjoyed great success with the Under-18s, leading them to a treble in the 2023/24 campaign.
United indicated they would be starting the process to bring in his replacement as soon as possible and last month, it emerged that Fletcher was in talks to take up the role.
It was revealed that Fletcher had been offered the job director of football Jason Wilcox and outgoing director of academy Nick Cox.
On Monday, United confirmed the appointment, announcing that Fletcher has started in the role with immediate effect.
He is leading the Under-18s through their pre-season programme, starting with a training camp at adidas’ global base in Herzogenaurach, Germany, and a friendly match against Queens Park Rangers at Carrington.
Fletcher said about his new position, “I am really excited to take on this new role and increase my responsibility to directly develop our young players.”
“I’m looking forward to working with such a talented age-group; supporting them to reach their potential and preparing them to enjoy careers at the highest level possible.”
Wilcox remarked, “We are delighted that Darren will lead our Under-18s group. He knows exactly what it takes to be a successful Academy graduate and has played a key role in shaping the pathway for so many of our young players in recent years.”
“Darren’s excellent relationships across the entire staff will only increase the strong connection between the Academy and first team, further enhancing our ability to produce world-class players ready to excel at Manchester United.”
Fletcher came through the ranks at United and went on to make over 340 appearances for the club during an incredibly successful spell that saw him win five Premier League titles, two League Cups, the FA Cup, the Champions League and the FIFA Club World Cup.
