José Mourinho has been dismissed by Turkish side Fenerbahçe after their Champions League exit at the hands of Benfica in midweek.

Mourinho leaves the Istanbul club after just 15 months in charge, during which he has struggles to get the team competing with dominant city rivals Galatasaray.

The move by Fener mirrors their other Istanbul rivals, Besiktas, who removed Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer following their Europa Conference League exit at the hands of Swiss side Lausanne.

Mourinho has been increasingly critical of Fener’s transfer activity this summer and caused a particular stir when claiming to have never heard of club director Hamdi Akın, following statements from Akın denouncing Benfica’s quality ahead of their tie. He will reportedly receive €9m in compensation for the remaining year of his contract.

Throughout his tenure in Türkiye, Mourinho has constantly spoken of ‘powerful people’ trying to prevent Fener from competing in the Super Lig. Galatasaray are viewed by many of the club’s fans to benefit from substantial political and financial favouritism, creating a closed competition within the country. Mourinho often took the theory with strong vindication, regularly advocating for change.

It is the fifth role in succession that Mourinho has departed through being fired during the season. In three of those positions – Chelsea, Manchester United and Roma – Mourinho won trophies, while Fener represent a trophyless experience, similar to that he endured at Tottenham Hotspur. As Mourinho departs, Fenerbahce remain on an 11-year wait to be national champions.
