Hamburg have officially confirmed the signing of Georgian right-back Giorgi Gocholeishvili on loan from Shakhtar Donetsk. The 24-year-old receives a second consecutive loan out from his parent club. Last year, Gocholeishvili made 33 appearances across all competitions for FC Copenhagen in Denmark. The 12-times-capped international now moves to the Bundesliga having already featured for Donetsk in the Europa League qualification round this year.
Gocholeishvili is Hamburg’s second defensive signing of the day. Earlier, the Hanseatic city-state club confirmed the arrival of Comoros international Warmed Omari on loan from Stade Rennes. Together, Hamburg have signed two defenders with a combined €5.5m estimated market worth. Factoring in Jordan Torunarigha’s signing on a free, Hamburg have added €9.5m in value to their defensive corps without shelling out any money.
“Giorgi brings a high level of defensive commitment and aggression to the team,” HSV sporting director Claus Costa noted in a club statement. “He’s also very good in transition and capable of making an impact in attack.“
“He is known as an absolute team player with a great work ethic,” HSV board-member-for-sport Stefan Kuntz added. “With all these attributes, he will not only benefit our defense, but the whole team, both on and off the pitch.”
“I can’t wait to get started and get to know my new teammates,” the player himself added. “I already have special memories of this stadium from my time [playing] with Shakhtar Donetsk [at the Volksparkstadion in the Champions League.”
