Oaktree Capital’s imminent takeover of Inter Milan is not the first time that the US-based fund has looked to invest in Serie A.

This according to today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Corriere della Sera, via FCInterNews.

Oaktree are now right on the verge of becoming the new owners of Inter.

The US-based fund will be able to start taking over the controlling shares in the club of Suning if and when the current owners default on their debt. That would be at the end of today.

This will represent Oaktree’s first foray into investing in Italian football.

And it is certainly a big one. The Nerazzurri are one of Italy’s most prominent clubs. They’re currently champions of Serie A as well as the league’s most recent Champions League winners and finalists.

Inter are big business too. Whilst the club’s financial issues in recent years are no secret, the revenues and potential for profits are certainly there.

Oaktree Taking Over Inter After Previous Attempts At Serie A & Serie B Investments

Last year, Oaktree made an offer to make an investment in the image and broadcasting rights of Serie A as well as Serie B.

This reflected the fact that the fund clearly believe that there is potential value in Italian football.

However, the Lega Serie A rejected the offer from Oaktree.

The fact that the fund were keen to try and capitalize on a slice of Serie A media rights could certainly have been a telling signal, however.

The US fund demonstrated that they had a genuine interest in involvement in Italian football.

Therefore, it now looks to be an early sign of Oaktree coming to see their €275 million loan to Inter owners Suning in 2021 as more than just an opportunistic effort to cash in on the Nerazzurri’s financial situation.

Rather, the fund have begun taking a real interest in Italian football over the last few years. And this will lead to their actually running Inter once they take over.
