Notts County are taking a keen interest in a loan move for 17-year-old Sunderland goalkeeper Matty Young, according to a Patreon report this morning from journalist Alan Nixon.

Young spent the second half of this season on loan at National League North side Darlington and now looks set for a loan spell in the EFL, with the League Two side emerging as a potential suitor.

The teenager is believed to be very well thought of at Sunderland, as Manchester United and Manchester City have both reportedly scouted Young.

Whilst the Black Cats continue their trend of producing high quality goalkeepers, Nixon's report also states that Sunderland's young midfielder Caden Kelly is wanted by National League side Halifax Town on loan.

The report states that Notts County are keen on signing Matty Young on loan.

As confirmed via the club's retained list, 24-year-old keeper Aidan Stone will be allowed to explore a move away from Meadow Lane this summer, after making 23 appearances with four clean sheets in League Two this season.

23-year-old Fulham loanee Luca Ashby-Hammond will be returning to his parent club this summer, leaving 35-year-old veteran shot-stopper Sam Slocombe as the only senior goalkeeping option at this current moment.

Therefore, it's clear that manager Stuart Maynard is casting an eye towards the future in regards to his goalkeeping options, and the Sunderland teenager could push the veteran Slocombe for starting opportunities should he make the switch.

The Black Cats have developed an impressive production line of goalkeeping talent in recent times, with the most high profile being England international Jordan Pickford, whilst current goalkeeper Anthony Patterson has been tracked by top clubs such as Arsenal and Liverpool for multiple seasons.

Next off that production line of talent could be the 17-year-old Young, as the Championship club appear set on finding their hot prospect a loan move to the EFL this summer.

Already an England youth international, Young appears to have a bright future in the game ahead of him, and has already accumulated experience in senior football via a recent loan spell with Darlington.

Five clean sheets in 14 National League North appearances is a respectable number given his tender age, and as this was his first taste of men's football.

Young has also been entrusted to step up to the most advanced and senior academy football competition in England, Premier League 2, and kept clean sheets in three of his six appearances.

It remains to be seen whether Maynard is viewing the young goalkeeper as direct competition for the number one shirt at Notts County next season, or whether Maynard simply views Young as a promising backup who will see the majority of his action in cup competitions.

What is clear though is that his parent club Sunderland deem him ready for regular professional football minutes, and if County can't provide that guarantee to the Black Cats, they may well be unafraid to look elsewhere for another suitor for Young.
