The Clarets found themselves in a rare losing position early on via Mamadou Doumbia's eighth-minute opener, but goals from Zian Flemming and the skipper himself turned the contest on its head, and put Burnley in position to wrap up promotion to the top flight on Monday.

Brownhill, who is out of contract in the summer, reiterated his goal of taking his team back to the Premier League in an interview with the Burnley Express. The 29-year-old claimed: “There's nothing more I want than to get Burnley Football Club back into the Premier League."

Despite his current contract situation, Brownhill's focus remains fully on the task at hand - achieving promotion to the Premier League.

Following the victory over the Hornets on Good Friday, the Clarets skipper spoke to the Burnley Express about what promotion would mean to him.

“There's nothing more I want than to get Burnley Football Club back into the Premier League. It's where they belong," Brownhill said.

“Me being captain, I feel like it's my role, off the pitch, to make sure that this club is a Premier League club, and we're so, so close now.

“It's still not done. There's a lot of hard work from now until Monday [when Burnley play Sheffield United] and until the following games.

"I'm just really excited for it, but it'll mean absolutely everything to get this club back to the Premier League.”

Brownhill's Premier League dream could come true on Monday

Whilst the fight for the title looks like it could go down to the wire, with Burnley and Leeds United level on points, Scott Parker's side can wrap up a place in the Premier League next season if they beat third-place Sheffield United on Monday.

The Blades have been shaky in recent weeks, which has seen them fall to five points outside the automatic promotion places. If Burnley are victorious on Monday, that gap will widen to eight points, and with six on offer for the rest of the season, United will be unable to catch the Clarets.

With home advantage in the Lancashire side's favour, there will be a bumper crowd at Turf Moor on Easter Monday to watch Parker's side potentially secure a return to the top flight of English football at the first time of asking. This will also see captain Brownhill achieve his dream of being the man to lead his side back to the Premier League.

His future may remain up in the air, but the 29-year-old admitted he wants to play at the highest level. If Burnley are to achieve promotion this season, it will be a huge boost to their chances of retaining the midfielder past the summer, and locking him down to a new contract.

However, until the job is done, Brownhill's stance remains as it was.
