In a recent interaction, Barcelona legend Gerard Pique has named his favourite player in the current Barcelona squad and it is not Lamine Yamal but fellow teenage prodigy Pau Cubarsi.

Pique, one of the greatest modern-day defenders, stepped away from the game in November 2022, right in the middle of the Blaugrana’s La Liga title-winning season.

While being fully focused on his other projects, including the Kings’ League, Pique continues to root for and support Barcelona from a distance and is always up-to-date on the happenings at his boyhood club.

As such, the Blaugrana legend was asked to name his favourite player from the current squad at Hansi Flick’s disposal.

Lamine Yamal would likely have been the guess of many people given his La Masia roots, the importance he holds in this Barcelona setup, and the fact that the club legend has spoken very highly of him in the past.

However, Pique chose a fellow defender instead, as he said (h/t FCB World): “Everyone will say Lamine, but for me, it’s Pau Cubarsi.”

Pique’s decision to choose Cubarsi might not come as a big surprise given that the youngster plays in a position that the club legend had made his own for years and there are also some similarities stylistically between the two.

Pique also answered some other questions during the chat, such as naming the opposition club he most respected, to which he replied:

“In Spain Real Madrid, in Europe Bayern Munich.”

On being asked to name one player he would have liked to see at Barça, the iconic former defender chose Andrea Pirlo.

Finally, when asked what FC Barcelona means to him, Pique simply replied: “Everything,” showing his love and affection for the club of his heart.
