FLW's Norwich City fan pundit has been discussing Josh Sargent's potential move to Burnley.
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more...
As was recently revealed exclusively by Football League World, Norwich City striker Josh Sargent is a target for Burnley.
It's our understanding that the Clarets are set to battle fellow Premier League side Leeds United for the forward, who netted 15 goals for Norwich last season.
Sargent is under contract with the Canaries until 2028, giving the club significant leverage in any transfer discussions this summer.
We asked our Norwich fan pundit, Zeke Downes, whether a move to Burnley would be disappointing for fans at Carrow Road.
Speaking to Football League World, Zeke said: “Well, obviously I would be disappointed, but it's a move to the Premier League, so I can see why he would want that.
“But I do think that he could aim a little bit higher, and he would know that them or Leeds, they are clubs that could possibly go straight back down.
“So, he will probably be wary of that. I would be as well. I would be aiming towards more like a team like West Ham, who need a striker. Or there's Brentford, but Brentford is a bit of a risk now. They're losing a lot of their players, and they've obviously lost their manager as well.
“So, I think he could aim a little bit higher, either in the Premier League or if he went back to the Bundesliga, or I think he would suit Serie A as well. I know that there's been some interest there from teams like Roma.
“So, I think that would be the ideal place, but if Burnley offer us enough money, then he may well go there, and I would wish him all the best.
“But I've still got hopes that we could maybe keep him if we don't get a big enough offer.”
The Norwich striker has been at the top of his game for a few seasons now, registering 13, 16 and 15 goals in three consecutive Championship seasons.
But those seasons have seen Norwich claim one sixth-placed finish wedged between two 13th-place berths in the second tier, which is not exactly inspiring confidence that progress towards the Premier League is consistently being made.
At 25 years old, with three years left on his contract and coming off the back of a strong scoring season in an underperforming Norwich side, Sargent is probably now somewhere near the peak of his value.
He's tasted Premier League football earlier in his career with the Canaries, but a striker of his quality deserves another shot at it with that extra bit of maturity in his game.
If Norwich have another poor season, or Sargent doesn’t quite do the business at Carrow Road next term, everyone involved will be looking back at this summer with regret, knowing that they probably missed the boat to sell.
His recent form will make this a difficult sell, but it feels like the time could be right.
