Josh Sargent has been excellent for Norwich City, but he has missed more big chances than any other player in the Championship.

Norwich City are impressing under Johannes Hoff Thorup, with the new boss getting a tune out of his side going into the October international break.

The Canaries had a very difficult summer, as Thorup inherited a squad that lost two of their best players in Jon Rowe and Gabriel Sara, whilst Adam Idah was another high-profile sale.

Even though that was disappointing, it did give the recruitment team money to spend, and some of the new signings are starting to make an impact.

However, Thorup has also improved players who were already at the club, with Borja Sainz the obvious example.

And, another individual who appears to be benefiting from Thorup's coaching is Josh Sargent.

The USA international has shown himself to be a good player at this level over the past 18 months or so, but he appears to be a better all-round forward this season.

Sargent has scored four goals in nine games this term, and he has also registered three assists, which highlights how he is the perfect focal point for this side, and how his teammates benefit from his tireless running and intelligent link-up play.

Josh Sargent can be more clinical in front of goal

All connected to the club will be delighted at how Sargent is playing, but the reality is that all strikers will be judged on the number of goals they score.

If Sargent can maintain his current form, he is on course to hit 20 goals over a 46-game season, which is exactly the sort of return that Norwich will want.

But, perhaps the most exciting aspect for the Canaries is that this isn’t a case of Sargent hitting a purple patch that he won’t be able to continue, as stats from FotMob show that he has actually missed ten big chances this season, which is more than any other player.

On one hand, some will argue that it shows the 24-year-old is a poor finisher, which would be a concern. And, there’s no denying that Sargent can improve in front of goal.

Yet, it also offers a glimpse into the sort of numbers that Sargent could be hitting, and it demonstrates that he is doing a lot right.

Sargent is getting in the right areas, and with players like Marcelino Nunez and Sainz in the side, you are going to have opportunities if you make the right runs, because they have the quality to find you.

Plus, it should be said that his big chances aren’t necessarily down to bad finishing, as sometimes the goalkeeper will just pull off a great save, and there’s not much you can do about it.

Josh Sargent can spearhead Norwich City promotion push

Another encouraging factor is Sargent’s attitude. This is a player who endured a tough start to English football, and he was heavily criticised during Norwich’s time in the Premier League.

Nevertheless, he remained strong mentally, and he is continuously improving and working on his game as he looks to become a better striker.

So, you would expect him to work on his finishing to ensure that he starts taking more of the big chances that come his way.

Whether it’s improving with his head, with his one-touch attempts or showing more composure when he has time in front of goal, there are always ways to get better, and Sargent will strive to do that.

It’s an exciting time to be a Norwich fan, and there is a sense of intrigue as to how Thorup’s team can do this season.

The past four games suggest they can compete with the best, with Sainz and Sargent integral to their promotion chances.

The number nine has already made some big contributions, and he looks a class act, but there is scope for improvement, and if he does become more ruthless in front of goal, it could spell trouble for the rest of the Championship.
