Former Inter Milan striker Nicola Ventola hails the performances of his beloved club, but notes Lautaro Martinez isn’t at his best.
The Nerazzurri have been on superb form in Serie A, culminating with an astonishing 6-0 win over Lazio on Monday night. The game risked turning into a cricket score once the Biancocelesti players collapsed. Speaking of cricket, it was actually once practiced in Italy, particularly in the city of Milano when a group of English gentlemen launched a certain club by the name of AC Milan in 1899. So after making short work of the in-form Lazio, Inter have consolidated themselves as the main Scudetto favorites, even if Atalanta still occupy the top spot in the Serie A standings.
For his part, Ventola feels the Nerazzurri could be their own worst enemy with their ‘lazy’ approach. Nevertheless, he insists that Simone Inzaghi’s men are unstoppable on their day.
“Inter are sometimes lazy, in the sense that they know they are strong and if they go into match management they risk doing, like in Leverkusen, or instead they succeed like they did against Parma, picking the right moment to inflict damage,” said the 46-year-old during his appearance on Viva el Futbol podcast via FcInterNews.
“With Lazio, the game was balanced up to a certain point. But then when Inter pushes the pace, they become devastating.
“They are the strongest team in the league and Inzaghi has made the group grow exponentially.”
However, Ventola rues the disappointing form of Lautaro Martinez this season. The Argentine hasn’t been able to recapture the magic of his previous campaign when he finished as the league’s top scorer and won the Serie A MVP Award.
The retired striker feels that the captain’s struggles is the only blemish for the Nerazzurri at the moment.
“Inter continued to play the game, looking for goals. The only discordant note is Lautaro. It’s not just a question of not scoring goals. I love him, I like him so much for how he participates in the game. This is something you do well when you are lucid and in shape.
“However, he’s not at the moment. I see him a bit slow in his choices.
“Nevertheless, the player’s quality is not up for discussion, he is the strongest striker in the Italian league. But physically, I see him struggling.”
