Nico Williams has emerged as a serious summer transfer target for Real Madrid.
Madrid admire his explosive style, youth and commercial appeal and view him as a natural fit for their long-term strategy.
The 22-year-old’s €58 million release clause makes the deal relatively straightforward. That figure, set during his last contract renewal, is considered a bargain for a player viewed as a future star.
Madrid are particularly drawn to Williams’ profile. He is a Spanish international with a growing reputation across Europe.
His performances at the 2024 European Championship and his role in Athletic’s run to the Europa League semi-finals have elevated his standing.
Signing him would also carry symbolic weight. Barcelona were close to securing Williams last summer, but financial constraints forced them to pull out.
Madrid now have the opportunity to beat their rivals to one of LaLiga’s brightest homegrown prospects.
Los Blancos believe the move could partially counterbalance the rise of Lamine Yamal at Barcelona.
The club sees Williams as a player capable of generating excitement and media impact comparable to Lamal’s.
If Madrid trigger the clause, squad reshuffling would likely follow. Rodrygo Goes is reportedly at risk of losing his place if Williams arrives.
Discussions at board level are ongoing, but the feeling within the club is increasingly leaning towards action.
Williams is currently nursing a groin issue that has left his involvement in Sunday’s La Liga season finale against Barcelona in doubt.
It could be his final appearance for the Basque club if he plays.
Athletic remain hopeful of keeping their star man, but interest from Madrid, as well as from clubs in the Premier League, may prove decisive.
