Newcastle United signings in summer 2025.

When can we expect them?

We are ‘already’ on the ninth day of trading and no major Newcastle United signings so far.

Only the long reported and expected capture of Antonio Cordero, the teenage winger set to be assessed and then the teenage winger likely to go out on loan initially to get him first team football elsewhere.

Any remotely sensible NUFC supporter won’t be panicking at such an early stage but of course, all fans hoping for early Newcastle United signings, as early as possible anyway.

What can we expect?

Well, I think whenever we discuss anything to do with our football club, then what has happened in the past gives a pretty good guide.

I am of course talking about the past, only in terms of Eddie Howe and these Newcastle United owners, not the decade and a half that preceded that under Mike Ashley.

January 2022 transfer window – Newcastle United signings

7 January 2022 – Kieran Trippier signed from Atletico Madrid

13 January 2022 – Chris Wood signed from Burnley

30 January 2022 – Bruno Guimaraes signed from Lyon

31 January 2022 – Dan Burn signed from Brighton

31 January 2022 – Matt Targett signed from Aston Villa on an initial loan deal

Interesting to note that when we got to January 2022, Newcastle United were deep in relegation trouble and one of the favourites to go down. Yet three of the Newcastle United signings only arrived in the last 24 hours or so of the transfer window, whilst Wood could be signed earlier due to his £25m release clause, then after winning La Liga with Atletico Madrid the Spanish club did Trippier a favour when allowing him to leave mid-season without any prolonged transfer negotiation hassle due to personal reasons meaning he needed to return to the UK.

Summer 2022 transfer window – Newcastle United signings

8 June 2022 – Matt Targett signs on permanent deal from Aston Villa

23 June 2022 – Nick Pope signs from Burnley

1 July 2022 – Sven Botman signs from Lille

26 August 2022 – Alexander Isak signs from Real Sociedad

Some good early business in terms of Newcastle United signings in this window.

However, even though not reported as such, I have always felt that the Targett permanent deal had been agreed as part of the initial loan arrangement. Even if not the case, it was surely a simple matter to persuade Targett to agree a permanent move after the loan spell had worked so well.

Contact had originally been made with Sven Botman back in January 2022 but he wanted to stay at Lille and complete their Champions League campaign before leaving. I think this signing was agreed pretty much back then and no surprise that 1 July 2022 it was formally announced, the first day of the window that overseas signings by PL clubs could be officially registered.

Nick Pope was a brilliant bit of business, only £10m and completed in June 2022. After Burnley had been relegated it meant Pope was sure to leave and maybe the fact that Eddie Howe had previously managed at Turf Moor, didn’t do any harm in helping to get a deal done with his former club.

The massive signing, a new club record Alexander Isak only arriving three weeks after the season had kicked off.

Summer 2023 transfer window – Newcastle United signings

12 June 2023 – Yankuba Minteh signs from Odense

3 July 2023 – Sandro Tonali signs from AC Milan

23 July 2023 – Harvey Barnes signs from Leicester

8 August 2023 – Tino Livramento signs from Southampton

22 August 2023 – Lewis Hall signs from Chelsea

The Minteh signing was reportedly done months earlier and of course the teenager then was instantly announced as going to Feyenoord for the 2023/24 season, to get first team football.

For the first team squad ahead of a Champions League season, Sandro Tonali signed early July and in time to have a full pre-season. However, Harvey Barnes flew to America after signing to join the squad some way into their pre-season and friendlies. Whilst Tino was signed only four days before United hammered Villa 5-1 in the opening PL match and Lewis Hall signed a couple of weeks after the season had kicked off.

Conclusions

The pattern that builds for me, when looking back at Newcastle United signings.

Is that in the transfer windows where Eddie Howe and United have had the intention and financial/PSR situation in order to do so, they have made plenty of major expensive signings BUT they haven’t tended to happen early on.

If you look at Anthony Gordon’s arrival as well in January 2023, that didn’t happen until 30 January 2023, just as the window was coming to a close.

It has been made quite clear that this summer 2025 transfer window is another one where the club are in a position once again to deliver some major Newcastle United signings. However, the history of what has gone before these past few years, is that we are far more likely to see the big money spent on deals in July and potentially August, rather then June 2025…
