Newcastle United have opted against taking up the option to extend Callum Wilson’s contract, according to The Athletic journalist David Ornstein.
The Englishman is out of contract at the St James’ Park club next month, but there was an option to extend by another 12 months, which the Magpies have refused to activate.
However, Newcastle have entered negotiations about a new deal that is slightly more incentive-based, and the 33-year-old will decide whether he wants to remain at the club or move on.
Injuries limited Wilson to 22 appearances across all competitions this term, with a goal to his name.
Manager Eddie Howe is open to keeping him, but the veteran striker may be open to leaving for regular game time.
He was in fine form last season despite starting just nine times in 20 Premier League appearances, weighing in with nine goals and one assist, and Newcastle could do with his services next season.
Wilson joined the Magpies from Bournemouth in 2020 and has played 130 times, bagging 49 goals and 11 assists.
With Newcastle playing Champions League football next season after finishing fifth in the Premier League, his experience could be useful.
Howe needs quality squad depth to successfully navigate the busy season next term.
Fulham, Crystal Palace, Brentford and Southampton were reportedly keen on recruiting Wilson ahead of the January transfer window, and some of them could still be interested.
He will not be short of suitors given his wealth of experience and quality, and it will be intriguing to see the decision he makes in the coming days.
