Twelve days ago it was revealed (see below) that Newcastle United had made a bid for James Trafford, believed to be around the £16m mark.

That widespread reporting of the Newcastle offer saw a number of journalists go on to report that their understanding was that Burnley were looking for £20m before allowing the 21 year old to leave.

Now today (Thursday 20 June 2024), the Chronicle say that their information is that Burnley have officially knocked back that opening £16m offer.

However, if Newcastle United are willing to go up another £4m then they should get their big goalkeeping target, to come in and compete with/back-up Nick Pope, with Martin Dubravka universally expected to follow Loris Karius out of the exit door.

The Chronicle say that Burnley simply want to recoup their £15m investment last summer. As Man City have a sell-on clause, an offer of around £20m needed to allow Burnley’s cut to be around that £15m mark.

James Trafford is reportedly on £40,000 a week wages and so personal terms aren’t understood to be any kind of a potential obstacle.

The Mag report – 8 June 2024:

An exclusive on Saturday has reported that Newcastle United have made an offer for James Trafford.

The report is from The Mail and they say that talks too place throughout last week between Burnley and Newcastle United.

The culmination of those talking seeing Newcastle United bid £16m for James Trafford, according to the report.

The Mail though saying that their information is that Burnley are looking for closer to £20m.

The six feet six inch keeper moved to Burnley for £15m from Manchester City in summer 2023 but experienced a tough season.

Playing the opening 28 Premier League matches, James Trafford only kept two clean sheets, conceding a massive 62 goals in the 28 PL games.

Trafford was then dropped and Muric conceded 16 in the final 10 PL games, which included four at home to Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United. An improvement on Trafford’s stats but nowhere near enough to help keep Burnley up.

James Trafford was one of the seven players cut from the preliminary 33 man England squad, when Gareth Southgate named his final 26 man list.

Many other clubs have been credited with interest in the 21 year old keeper, including Chelsea, Liverpool and Bayern Munich.

The Mail saying there had been genuine interest from Newcastle in Aaron Ramsdale, only for Arsenal’s valuation to put them off and concentrate on James Trafford.

I think a universal belief amongst Newcastle United fans that Martin Dubravka will be replaced this summer by a new back up and competition for Nick Pope, with Mark Gillespie set to be third choice.

A valuation of no more than £20m is probably about fair, as having had a very difficult season and conceding loads of goals, James Trafford simply remains a young keeper with potential, as was the case last summer when Burnley paid Man City £15m.
