In a recent report, The Northern Echo stated that Newcastle United are in talks to land Atalanta defender Giorgio Scalvini this summer. It has been mentioned that the Magpies are eyeing a move to bring the Italian centre-back to Tyneside this off-season.
Scalvini missed a lot of games for Atalanta last season due to injuries. Still, he managed to catch the eye at times for the Italian club on the defensive end of the field.
The Italian sensation made eight appearances for his current club in the previous campaign across all fronts. He is amongst the best young defenders in Serie A football, so it is no surprise that Newcastle are showing interest in recruiting him this summer.
Scalvini’s current contract at the Italian club will run out in the summer of 2028 which could make it tough for the Magpies to sign him this off-season.

Scalvini is a good tackler of the ball and can time his challenges well to earn possession back for his team on the defensive third of the pitch. He usually puts his foot through the ball when needed and can use his strong 1.94m frame to dominate the opposition attackers in the air.
The Italian sensation mainly functions as a centre-back but can also fill in as a defensive midfielder if asked to do so. However, he would need some time to settle into the physical side and high intensity of the Premier League if Newcastle United manage to bring him on board this summer.
We can expect Scalvini to bring more quality and depth to Eddie Howe’s defensive department. He has what it takes to fight for a regular first-team spot at the Tyneside club in the coming seasons.
At 21, the future looks quite bright for Scalvini as long as he can overcome his injury problems and improve every year. With all things considered, the Magpies would be wise to get a deal done for the Italian central defender before the end of this transfer window. However, Howe has to be patient with his development before he can get the best out of the gifted defender.
