In a recent report, Sky Sport journalist Sacha Tavolieri claimed that Newcastle United are eyeing a move for Udinese defender Jaka Bijol. It has been stated that the Magpies are prepared to compete with Leeds United in the race to land the Slovenian talent.
Bijol enjoyed a good campaign at the Italian club recently as he was responsible for putting in a run of solid displays on the defensive third of the pitch. The 26-year-old scored two times and secured two assists in 37 matches for Udinese last season across multiple competitions.
The Slovenian centre-back deserves a ton of credit for making 43 tackles, 38 blocks and 38 interceptions per 90 minutes in Serie A football. He was even tidy when distributing possession from the back based on his pass success rate of 83.6% in league football (stats via fbref.com).
His current contract at the Italian club will expire in the summer of 2027. Thus, Newcastle would have to launch a convincing offer if they are serious about winning the race for Bijol’s services this off-season.

Bijol is a solid tackler of the ball and can read the danger well to secure the ball back for his side on the defensive third of the field. He usually clears the danger when needed and can even play his way out from the back. Bijol is primarily a centre-back but can also fill in as a defensive midfielder if asked to do so by his manager.
Standing at 1.90m, the Slovenian sensation is a strong presence in the air as well. However, there are some concerns over whether he would be able to cope with the high intensity of the Premier League if Newcastle manage to sign him this summer.
Bijol would bring more bite and steel to Eddie Howe’s defence. He has what it takes to compete for regular first-team football at St. James’ Park in the coming seasons.
At 26, Bijol is about to enter his prime which makes him a decent option for the Magpies to pursue in this summer transfer window. However, Howe has to give him some time before he can get the best out of the talented centre-half at the Tyneside club.
