In a recent report, The Times (subscription required) revealed that Newcastle United are eager to recruit Burnley keeper James Trafford this summer. It is believed that the Magpies have identified the English custodian as a target for this transfer window.
Trafford put in a string of impressive displays in goal for the Lancashire club in the previous campaign. The 22-year-old conceded just 16 goals in 45 matches while keeping 29 clean sheets in the process across multiple competitions.
The English talent proved his worth as the best keeper in the EFL Championship last season. However, it remains to be seen whether he can maintain his good form in the Premier League if Newcastle manage to acquire his services this summer.
Trafford is under contract at Turf Moor until the summer of 2027 which could make it difficult for the Magpies to sign him on the cheap this off-season.

Trafford is a solid handler of the ball and can use his quick reflexes to make a few important saves for his team at the back. He doesn’t mind putting his foot through the ball when needed but needs to work on improving his ball distribution from inside his half.
Standing at 1.92m, the English sensation is a towering presence inside his penalty area. Based on his form last season, it is no surprise that Newcastle are keen on bringing him to St. James’ Park this summer.
Trafford would undoubtedly enhance the quality of Eddie Howe’s match-day squad. He is good enough to compete with Nick Pope for a regular starting spot at the Tyneside club next season. At 22, Trafford has got a bright future ahead of him as long as he continues to improve with each year. Thus, the Magpies would do well to bring him on board in this transfer window.
At the moment, Trafford is performing at a high level and has what it takes to be a success story at Newcastle in the long run. He might even help the Tyneside outfit compete across all fronts over the next few years. Thus, Howe would be wise to snap him up soon.
