Murphy - on his 200th appearance for the club - had given the Magpies the advantage at St. James' Park but Marco Silva's side roared back to claim the three points.

Newcastle were unchanged from last weekend's win at Southampton and Bruno Guimarães headed off target from an Anthony Gordon cross in the opening exchanges but clear-cut chances were few and far between after that until the 28th minute, when the Magpies put together a superb move.

Fabian Schär found Joelinton, who in turn played in Guimarães; he sent Schär in on goal, but Benrd Leno blocked.

At the other end, Jiménez dragged a shot harmlessly across goal after racing onto a long kick towards the left-hand channel from the Fulham goalkeeper, then Adama Traoré - under pressure from Lewis Hall - headed wide after meeting an Alex Iwobi centre.

In the 35th minute, Sandro Tonali rattled the bar with a stunning effort from 25 yards after Isak's delivery was only half-cleared, but two minutes later the Magpies were ahead.

Gordon made great progress on the left and his low ball was deflected into the path of Murphy, who made no mistake with an emphatic finish.

Shortly before half time, Tino Livramento and Alexander Isak linked up on the right, allowing the former to gallop into the box but his shot was kept out by Leno.

Fulham started the second half strongly, with Emile Smith Rowe forcing Martin Dúbravka into two decent saves.

Calvin Bassey then headed over before Jiménez had a shot deflected just wide by Dan Burn then a header from a Saša Lukić corner blocked by Livramento.

But the Mexican's persistence paid off in the 61st minute as he swept home from Antonee Robinson's cross after a swift Cottagers counter.

United responded to the equaliser by fashioning a couple of openings of their own. First, substitute Joe Willock failed to apply the finishing touch to a low Isak cross, then in the 75th minute Isak received a pass from Willock and opened up his body to bend a strike which hit the crossbar.

There were loud appeals for a penalty for a handball by Timothy Castagne, but referee Chris Kavanagh waved them away.

And the visitors scored what proved to be the winner when two substitutes combined, with Andreas Pereira's left-wing free kick touched beyond Dúbravka by Rodrigo Muniz in the 82nd minute.
