Newcastle United are exploring a move to sign Yoane Wissa from Brentford after cooling their interest in Hugo Ekitike.
Eddie Howe’s side had an offer of €75m (£64m) turned down for Eintracht Frankfurt forward Ekitike earlier this month. The Magpies have not submitted an improved bid for the Frenchman.
Liverpool are now pushing to sign Ekitike and are advancing in negotiations with the Bundesliga side. The interest from the Premier League champions has led Newcastle to consider alternatives, with Wissa now on their radar.
The Athletic are reporting that no contact has yet been made with Brentford but Wissa is a player of interest. Newcastle are determined to bring in another forward to support Alexander Isak, following Callum Wilson’s exit from St James’ Park.
Wissa scored 19 goals in the Premier League last season, as many non-penalty goals as both Isak and Erling Haaland. Only Mohamed Salah (20) managed more in the division. He thrived amid a more regular role in West London, following the sale of Ivan Toney to the Saudi Pro League.
Tottenham Hotspur have also expressed interest in Wissa, with Brentford battling to hold onto their leading assets. Thomas Frank has already left to take charge of Spurs, while captain Christian Norgaard has joined Arsenal.
Elsewhere, Manchester United remain in talks to sign Bryan Mbeumo and Brentford are reluctant to lose both the Cameroonian and Wissa in the same transfer window.
The latter has 12 months to run on his current contract, though Brentford have the option to extend for a further season. Brentford value the 28-year-old at around £40m.
