Newcastle United are not throwing in the towel in their bid to sign Yoane Wissa from Brentford, but their pursuit has taken another twist.

According to The Standard, the 28-year-old striker is expected to return to Brentford training this week.

Wissa bagged 20 goals across all competitions last season, scoring 19 times in the Premier League, and Newcastle are keen to bring him to St. James’ Park this summer.

Newcastle have already seen a £25 million bid for Wissa turned down by Brentford, and the Magpies are believed to be preparing an offer of around £35m.

However, it may still not be enough to convince Brentford to let Wissa leave the club this summer.

The DR Congo international left Brentford’s pre-season training camp in Portugal last Tuesday after growing frustrated with the club’s antics.

He returned to London for urgent discussions with Brentford’s director of football, Phil Giles.

It’s understood Wissa believes he was promised a summer exit if a top club came calling, a promise he feels the club is now walking back on.

The Bees have already parted ways with Christian Norgaard and Bryan Mbeumo this summer, in addition to losing head coach Thomas Frank.

They’re getting picked apart and don’t want to lose Wissa in the same summer as they let Mbeumo leave, but he has made it clear that he wants to play Champions League football.

In a bid to ward off interest, Brentford have set Wissa’s asking price at £50m. The striker has one year left on his contract, but Brentford have an option to trigger an additional 12 months.

Wissa believes he may not get another opportunity to join a Champions League club if he’s priced out of a move to Tyneside this summer.

Newcastle are in a desperate search for a new striker after Alexander Isak rocked the club with a transfer request. Benjamin Sesko and Wissa are among strikers on their radar, but neither seems feasible at the moment.

Wissa has threatened not to play for Brentford again if he is not allowed to move to Newcastle, so it remains to be seen how the transfer saga plays out.
