Newcastle United are preparing to open talks with Brighton & Hove Albion over the signing of Joao Pedro, who has emerged as their top attacking target this summer.
Newcastle value the Brazilian forward at around £60 million, but Brighton are expected to push for a higher fee.
The 22-year-old became a serious option after Newcastle abandoned plans to sign Bryan Mbeumo.
The Brentford winger made it clear he preferred a move to Manchester United and would only join Newcastle if he was made their highest-paid player – a demand the club considered unrealistic.
Pedro fits Newcastle’s recruitment strategy in age and style. He appeals to the club’s recruitment team for his ability to operate across the front line.
The Brazilian scored 20 goals across all competitions last season and has impressed with his work rate, versatility and development since moving from Watford.
Manager Eddie Howe has been an admirer of Pedro since his early days in England and came close to signing him in 2022 before Newcastle signed Alexander Isak.
Newcastle’s pursuit has been made more optimistic by Brighton’s recent signing of Greek striker Charalampos Kostoulas, which could persuade them to part ways with Pedro.
Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga is also on Newcastle’s radar. The Sweden international is valued at £50 million, and the Magpies could move for him.
The club is also working to reinforce the defence. Ousmane Diomande of Sporting CP has been scouted extensively, while Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi is also on their radar.
Newcastle believe prices will fall closer to pre-season and are prepared to be patient. The club’s failure to sign Guehi last summer has prompted a shift towards quieter negotiations, especially for overseas players.
