We asked The Armchair Fan to give us his match ratings and player comments after Newcastle 3 Aston Villa 0.

Newcastle played host to Aston Villa this Boxing Day, in a match that proved to be an absolute Christmas cracker for those in black and white.

Taking the lead in less than 90 seconds, it set the tone for a fine win and United now find themselves firmly in contention for the Champions League places.

Let’s take a look at how the lads performed individually throughout a very well-deserved victory.

Newcastle United players – Ratings:

Dubravka – 7

Didn’t have a lot to do but looked composed throughout and made a great save from a free-kick at 1-0.

Is staking his claim for a place in the first team on merit.

Trippier – 7

Looked good going forward and solid at the back.

Great to see him back on form.

Yellow card on twenty three mins and subbed off near the end.

Schar – 8

Threatened to double our lead with a ferocious free-kick.

Made a fantastic sliding tackle that frustrated Duran into kicking out for his red card.

Burn – 7

Solid and composed at the back.

Hall – 7

Seems to be really settling into his place in the team at present.

Working well with Gordon down the left.

Bruno – 8

Desperately unlucky to see a goal ruled out.

Looked brilliant in the middle and is hitting some great form. subbed off near the end.

Tonali – 9

Looked absolutely class throughout, ran things from the very first minute and was unlucky to see a good effort saved at the end of the first half.

Joelinton – 9

Kicked things off with an assist in the first minute and settled things with a great goal in the last.

Back to his best. Picked up a yellow card.

Murphy – 8

Much better in the second half after having been a little quiet in the first.

Assist for the crucial second goal.

Hit the bar and has been involved in a number of goals over the past few games, subbed off near the end.

Gordon – 9

Gave us the perfect start with an incredible goal inside 90 seconds.

Always looked a threat and is consistently one of our best players.

Looked gutted to be subbed off but rested legs for Old Trafford could prove very useful indeed.

Isak – 8

Always a threat, a striker at the very top of his game.

Looks like scoring every time he plays.

Desperately unlucky to have a goal disallowed as well as the one he scored. Subbed off near the end.

Willock – N/A

Miley – N/A

Barnes – N/A

None of the subs were on long enough to make much of a difference or to rate properly.

It was however, great to see Miley again. Hopefully he’ll give Eddie a massive selection headache as he tries to accommodate a number of superb midfielders. Not a bad problem to have.
