Liverpool dropped points in the Premier League title race on Wednesday evening as a late Fabian Schar strike helped Newcastle United earn a hard-fought 3-3 draw on Tyneside.
Following a week of dizzying highs for Liverpool in which they toppled both the European and Premier League champions, the Reds struggled to maintain those lofty standards at St James' Park. An uncharacteristically disjointed first-half display saw them deservedly behind at the break, with the impressive Alexander Isak powering Newcastle ahead.
The goals were not in short supply after the half-time whistle as Curtis Jones' well-taken equaliser was quickly cancelled out by Liverpool target Anthony Gordon. However, Mohamed Salah produced a second leveller for the Reds shortly afterwards to quieten the St James' Park crowd.
The Egyptian king rose again to put Liverpool in front and it seemed likely to be the winner, but an error from Caoimhin Kelleher allowed Newcastle centre-back Shcar to equalise in the closing stages with an exceptional sliding finish.
The result doesn't impact Liverpool's status as league leaders but they have now been clawed back by the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City in the title race.
