We asked Mark Jankwski to give us his match ratings and player comments after Newcastle 1 Arsenal 0.

Newcastle United delivered their biggest performance of the season against title challengers Arsenal.

The intensity and commitment of the Howe era was clearly back in full flow and the North Londoners couldn’t handle it.

A fully deserved three points was picked up with no controversy for Arteta and the Arsenal fans to whinge about.

Some early pressing turned possession over in the final third and after a few crisp passes, Anthony Gordon fired in a pinpoint cross for Isak to expertly nod us in front.

Arsenal never really looked like they were going to threaten our goal but this was as much to do with our own excellent performance than Arsenal’s failings.

A fantastic three points to get our season moving back in the right direction.

Pope – 7

In reality it was a very quiet afternoon for our goalkeeper.

Demonstrated his lack of confidence/ability with the ball at his feet on a couple of occasions but in reality did everything that was asked of him well. Didn’t have a save to make so can’t give him higher.

Livramento – 9

Had two of Arsenal’s three Gabriels in his pocket all afternoon and if the centre half had decided to venture into his area of the pitch, I’ve no doubt he’d have been pocketed too.

Schar – 8

Defended well and looked comfortable on the ball as always.

Picked up a daft booking for kicking the ball away in the first half but otherwise did his job well and looked more like the Fab we’ve grown to love.

Burn – 8

Arsenal’s reluctance to get the ball into the box and the fact they don’t actually have a striker, meant Burn had a a fairly comfortable afternoon.

Havertz clumsily threw himself around a bit but big Dan dealt with him well.

Hall – 10

This young man is going from strength to strength this season, delivering another top drawer man of the match performance.

Bukayo Saka got precisely nothing out of Hall all afternoon and he made some crucial covering challenges and a goal saving block from Arsenal’s only genuine chance.

I saw a tweet asking if Lewis Hall is the most in-form English left back at the moment. On this showing it’s hard to disagree.

Longstaff – 8

I make no secret I have a love/hate relationship with the pride of North Shields.

He delivered one of his better performances, contributing tireless effort while playing within his abilities on the ball and not making any silly errors. He was the right man for the job on the day!

Bruno – 9

I was tempted to dock him a point for losing yet another coin toss but Bruno put in his best performance of the season today.

Competing hard for every ball while also showing his class in possession. A true captain’s performance.

Willock – 8

Willock is finally starting to get back to his best.

He has an excellent understanding with Joelinton and they dovetail exceptionally well down the left hand side of the pitch.

It was a combination that caused numerous opponents problems a couple of years ago and it certainly did the same again today.

Gordon – 9

Jurien Timber will be having nightmares about Anthony Gordon for weeks.

While he’s undoubtedly our best left winger, I think he’s made the case that he needs to stay on the right until we can recruit someone new. His cross for the goal was utter perfection.

Isak – 9

Up against a centre back pairing that many regard as the best in the league, Isak showed why it pays to have a proper striker leading the line (something Arsenal lack).

He held his own in the physical battle and is getting back to his elusive best with the ball at his feet.

His movement and finish for the goal were world class. As the saying goes “form is temporary, class is permanent.”

Joelinton – 8

A vintage battling performance from big Joe.

He provided a well-needed physical presence out of possession and held the ball up, linking play magnificently when we had the ball.

Probably should have worked Raya more with a late header but that’s being a tad fussy.

SUBS

Tonali – 7

Dropped to the bench after s dominant midweek performance,

Sandro worked his socks off once he came on. We were sitting back quite a bit by this point but he got his foot in well when needed.

Barnes – 7

Replaced a tiring Gordon towards the end and I imagine Howe and Tindall will be delighted by his brief shift.
