Napoli boss Antonio Conte has earmarked Torino goalkeeper Vanja Milinkovic-Savic as a concrete transfer target for the summer. According to Sky Sport Italia, the title-bidding Partenopei boss holds the Serbia international in high esteem and could launch an assault to bring him to Naples at the end of the season.
Despite being on the verge of tying Italian stopper Alex Meret down to a new long-term contract, Napoli are in the market for a new keeper. Indeed, Conte wants a more reliable option between the sticks as he aims to re-establish the three-time Serie A champions as genuine title contenders.
Though Paolo Vanoli’s men languish in mid-table, Milinkovic-Savic has been phenomenal in goal. Only six Serie A goalkeepers have kept more clean sheets than the 28-year-old’s nine. Moreover, he has saved four penalties this term, a tally bettered by no other keeper across Europe’s traditional top-five leagues.
Therefore, Napoli are keen to make the towering Serb their new goalkeeper for next season. Meanwhile, talks with Meret over a long-awaited contract extension are progressing smoothly. In fact, it’s only a matter of time before the ex-Udinese man puts pen to paper on a new deal.
However, Meret’s stay won’t change Conte’s mind. Ominously for Napoli, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is also a big-time admirer of Milinkovic-Savic. In addition to his stunning saves, the Torino star is also comfortable with the ball at his feet, making him a perfect fit for the Spaniard’s tactics at the Etihad Stadium.
