Chelsea star Mykhailo Mudryk has passed a lie detector test as he seeks to avoid a drugs ban, the chief executive of his former club has claimed.
Mudryk is provisionally suspended after testing positive for a banned substance while on international duty with Ukraine last year.
The 24-year-old, who was an £89million signing from Shakhtar Donetsk, has not played for Chelsea since November while awaiting the results of a ‘B’ sample.
He has denied ever knowingly taking a banned substance but could be hit with a lengthy ban should that test confirm the initial adverse finding.
In an interview with GiveMeSport, Shakhtar CEO Sergei Palkin revealed he has been in regular contact with his club’s former player since the positive test emerged.
“He doesn’t understand how it could have happened,” he said. “He has no clue. No idea at all.
“So his lawyers organised for him to take a lie detector test, which he passed. It will form part of the evidence showing he didn’t intentionally do anything wrong.
“Mudryk has been clear, it’s not his fault that he tested positive. We now need to find out how this has happened, and who did this. His lawyers are trying to find out.
“There are still no results from the B-sample, so that remains open. Nobody knows what’s happened. I wish Mudryk all the best. He’s a top professional and a very good person. He should be protected.”
Having signed for the Blues in January 2023 when rated as one of Europe’s most exciting young forwards, Mudryk’s career in English football is still yet to take off and he had made just one Premier League start this season before being ruled out of contention.
The deal to take him to Stamford Bridge included a number of performance-based add-ons and Palkin says Shakhtar are set to miss out on a significant windfall if Mudryk does not play for Chelsea again.
“Shakhtar also has a vested interest,” he explained. “There are bonuses from his move to Chelsea linked to his performances. If he’s not playing, it causes problems for us because we could potentially lose €30m.
“So Shakhtar, Chelsea and Mudryk, we are in one boat. We all support Mudryk, and hope he is allowed to continue playing football soon.”
