It took just 19 minutes of Vincent Kompany’s league bow for his side to open their account when Jamal Musiala tapped in from close range after fantastic work down the right from Sacha Boey to set him up.

Before half-time, Musiala had a big penalty appeal waved off but there was one awarded shortly after the restart, this time the way of the hosts as Lovro Majer coolly slotted home from 12 yards.

Moments later, he came within inches of a second but his excellent effort was kept out by the frame of the goal, although he couldn’t miss shortly afterwards when Wolfsburg carved their visitors open and the Croatian was teed up for a simple finish which their early onslaught merited.

On 65 minutes, Thomas Müller entered for Bayern and made history in the process, his 474th outing in the Bundesliga taking him above Sepp Maier for Bayern in the club’s all time appearance rankings – and his presence resulted in an instant turnaround in fortunes.

The veteran was only on the field for a matter of seconds when his flick on from a corner resulted in an own goal to equalise.

Bayern then snatched the win with eight minutes remaining through Serge Gnabry and again Müller was heavily involved, doing brilliantly to keep the ball alive under pressure to set up Harry Kane, who in turn teed up the winger to fire home for victory.
