Mohamed Salah Crowned 2025 FWA Footballer of the Year After Historic Season

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has been named the 2025 Football Writers’ Association (FWA) Footballer of the Year, capping off a historic campaign in which he was instrumental in securing the club’s 20th league title. It is the third time Salah has received the honour—following wins in 2018 and 2022—drawing him level with Thierry Henry as the only players to achieve the feat thrice.

This time, however, Salah didn’t just win the award—he dominated it. The Egyptian star claimed a staggering 90 per cent of the votes cast by the 918 eligible FWA members, marking the widest margin of victory in the 21st century. His Liverpool teammate Virgil van Dijk finished second, while Alexander Isak of Newcastle United and Arsenal’s Declan Rice completed the top four.

FWA chair John Cross was effusive in his praise: “Rarely has there been a more popular winner than Mo. His overwhelming victory is just a reflection of an incredible season. He continues to rewrite the record books and his performances this season have obviously been key to Liverpool’s 20th title. It’s been a privilege watching him this season and it will be a privilege to welcome him to our dinner to celebrate his success.”

Consistency and Brilliance Define Salah’s 2024-25 Season

Salah’s output this season has been nothing short of phenomenal. Across all competitions, he has registered 33 goals and 23 assists in just 49 appearances—figures that speak not only to his clinical finishing but also his vision and creativity in the final third.

With 28 goals in the Premier League alone, he leads the race for the Golden Boot, while his 18 assists have him well on course to capture the Playmaker of the Season award. Those dual contributions are a rarity at the elite level, yet Salah makes them seem routine.

Symbol of Liverpool’s Renaissance Under Arne Slot

Salah’s award is not just a personal accolade; it’s emblematic of Liverpool’s resurgence under new manager Arne Slot. In his debut season at Anfield, the Dutchman led the Reds to a Premier League title—a feat many thought improbable after Jurgen Klopp’s departure last year.

Slot’s tactical approach has brought the best out of Salah, placing him in positions to thrive both as a goalscorer and provider. The No.11 has responded in kind, showing his usual hunger for goals while also embracing the broader responsibilities of leadership and creativity.

While some wondered if his peak years were behind him, Salah has answered emphatically. His form this season has not only silenced doubters but reasserted his place among the very best in world football.

Legacy Cemented at Anfield and Beyond

This third FWA Footballer of the Year title elevates Salah above Liverpool greats like Sir Kenny Dalglish and John Barnes, both of whom won the award twice. In a club steeped in tradition, Salah’s achievement is monumental.

What sets him apart is not merely the statistics, impressive as they are, but the consistency, humility and professionalism he’s shown throughout. In a season of high expectations and intense pressure, Salah has once again delivered in spades.

When he collects his award at the FWA gala dinner later this month, it won’t just be a moment of personal triumph. It will be a celebration of one of the finest individual seasons in Premier League history—one that underpinned Liverpool’s title-winning campaign and reminded the footballing world of Mohamed Salah’s enduring brilliance.
