As things stand, AC Milan will not play in Europe next season, barring a heroic performance in the Coppa Italia. A bleak picture.
With the defeat to Atalanta on Sunday, Milan sit in ninth place, six points away from a European place, and that gap may only be widened with Lazio having a game in hand over sixth-placed Roma. An eight-point gap is in place between fifth-placed Juventus on 59 points, whilst the gap to Bologna stands at nine.
In other words, the Rossoneri being miles off of it on the pitch is being well and truly reflected in the standings, and it seems like the club are returning to the ‘dark days’, with Milan News looking back to the last season without Europe.
Of course, we can look at the 2019/20 season, when the Diavolo were banned from Europe for a season due to breaking Financial Fair Play rules. However, the last season in which the club did not qualify for Europe was the 2015/16 season, where Milan finished the season in seventh on 57 points.
Six points are needed to better that record this year, and the chances are the league position will not be as kind, with the gap already in place. Action is certainly needed.
