Miron Muslic is keen on reuniting with his former Plymouth player Nikola Katic at Schalke.
Miron Muslic is interested in signing former Plymouth Argyle loanee Nikola Katic at his new club Schalke.
The 42-year-old was named as Wayne Rooney’s successor at Home Park back in January, signing a three-and-a-half-year contract with the club.
During his time in charge, Plymouth improved considerably, although it wasn’t enough to stop the side from suffering relegation to League One.
Even though there was an expectation that Muslic would stick around, he surprised many by joining Schalke, with Argyle now in advanced talks to appoint Tom Cleverley.
As well as losing the manager, relegation meant Plymouth said goodbye to several players - with Katic one of those.
The dominant centre-back joined Argyle in January, and he quickly established himself as a key player under Muslic, and his performances caught the eye, with Katic memorably starring in the FA Cup win over Liverpool.
Yet, the 28-year-old has now returned to parent club Zurich, with a return to Plymouth always unlikely given they are now in the third tier.
But it appears Muslic could reunite with Katic, as Fussball Transfers revealed how Sky Deutschland have confirmed the defender is a target for Schalke, who are expected to pay under £1m to sign the former Rangers man permanently.
This is a blow for Plymouth, as Katic would’ve been a great addition for the club.
Not only did he prove himself to be a strong, capable centre-back during his time in the green shirt, but he was also a real leader, so he will be missed.
But, as soon as the side were relegated, everyone would have known that, from a financial and football perspective, keeping Katic would have been very difficult - and that has proven to be the case.
Whilst there was some unhappiness at Muslic about the way he left, most will wish Katic well for the future, and they will have appreciated his commitment to the club after joining on loan.
Ultimately, though, Plymouth’s only focus is on building a squad that can bounce back to the Championship.
