Milan moved concretely for just another coach before choosing Sergio Conceiçao: Maurizio Sarri, who was the frontrunner the last time Paulo Fonseca was hanging by a thread. The Rossoneri proposed a short-term deal to the former Lazio manager last Friday, who turned it down, Alfredo Pedullà relays.
The officials proposed an 18-month deal with a club option to rescind it unilaterally next summer. The veteran would have accepted a pact of the same length but without that caveat and a clause to renew it should they qualify for the Champions League.
Instead, Conceiçao took the same offer from Milan, which will have six months to evaluate the fit and his work. The contract of Fonseca was terminated immediately with a penalty amounting to eight monthly wages, La Gazzetta dello Sport informed. The timing of the dismissal didn’t matter in that sense.
The new skipper made his first remarks on the club’s TV (via Mediaset).
“I’m proud of this adventure, but the emotion won’t last long because we have to get to work. We represent a great club on the global stage and must measure up to it. I must make sure that the players understand what they have to do individually to be a good side on the pitch in the short time at my disposal. We need a strong mentality and organization. Talking is cheap, and I have to prove myself through facts and results.”
Other than the fact that they are seasoned, they are very diverse stylistically and in terms of characters. The pool was narrow, but it looks like the brass went with the ‘best available’ logic rather than searching for somebody with a precise profile and philosophy.
