Milan Put Maignan Renewal on Hold Following His Errors | OneFootball

Milan have formalized the Tijjani Reijnders extension and will do the same with Christian Pulisic soon, but things are stalling with Mike Maignan despite the heightened priority given its expiration date and the fact that the parties have reached an agreement in principle a while back, La Gazzetta dello Sport informs.

The Rossoneri pressed pause because the goalie has had more than a few gaffes this year. The most glaring ones were against Feyenoord and Torino, but he wasn’t perfect also versus Como, Cagliari, Juventus, and Lazio either. On the other hand, he has also pulled off some monster saves during the same stretch. Plus, he has become a more vocal leader and the permanent captain with Sergio Conceiçao at the helm.

Milan and Maignan have concurred on a new contract until 2028 with €3.5M wages and robust performance-based add-ons. However, the officials are weighing whether he’s really worth those figures given his recent performances.

If the Rossoneri pulled the plug on the renewal altogether, they’d put the shot-stopper on the market for about €35M. The Frenchman was acquired from Lille in the summer of 2021 for €13M before the negotiation with Gianluigi Donnarumma collapsed.

It’s a tougher call than the ones involving his teammates, which have simply been great. They might be waiting for their next director since the topic has dragged on for so long. The wages wouldn’t be exorbitant for their standards and a top-notch goalie in general, but he hasn’t been that in recent months. There’s a chance they have caught wind they could receive a satisfying offer and could nab a worthy replacement for relatively cheap.
